Steve has written book chapters on law firm risk management, data protection and privacy in the U.S., mitigating law firm cyber risk, ethics, and ediscovery. He was one of the authors of the American Bar Association's amicus brief filed in the United States Supreme Court in Williams-Yulee v. The Florida Bar.

Dean is an experienced security practitioner with 24 years of combined information security and IT experience, including 18 years working with Am Law 250 law firms. He has significant experience in developing, evangelizing and implementing cost-effective, robust security programs. Dean has published articles on hacking and securing Oracle and other enterprise databases, adopting controls to protect laws firms and other professional services businesses, and he has contributed several chapters to the newly published SANS MGT 514 course: IT Security Planning, Policy, and Leadership. Dean has spoken at numerous cybersecurity forums, including the Utah State Bar, San Diego Legal Defenders, Utah Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Defcon’s DC801, OWASP, ISACA, UtahSec, Infragard and other professional organizations across the country. Dean is completing his Masters of Science in information security management from the SANS Technology Institute. In his free time, Dean enjoys Spartan races, CrossFit and other activities that are physically and mentally challenging.
