Capital One Legal Department
Only presidents and inventors get to have someone else write their biographies. For everyone else, we write our own. Everyone knows this, right? So, why do we insist on writing in the third person? So we can say things like "internationally-recognized," "thought leader," or "world-renowned" with a straight face? I'm Ryan Nier. I wrote this. I'm not internationally recognized. I'm the lawyer for Capital One's "Digital" line of business, which is a fancy way of saying that I represent a few hundred people working on exploratory banking technology. "Exploratory" means that it's not just the way you log on to your account to view your statement -- it's apps, money management tools, identity platforms, APIs, authentication technologies (e.g., biometrics), voice-activated tech (e.g., Alexa), and stuff that gets a little more 'out there.' Before that, I spent 9 years at Paul Hastings doing privacy, data security, IP lit, and what I'd call 'technology lit' (from software to solar to 3D modeling). Before that, I was a software developer. In my free time, I make art and buy tools.

Since then, he has worked as an attorney, a legal technologist, and an evangelist for digital strategy and innovation in legal.

Michael combines over 20 years of technology experience and 15 years legal experience, overseeing strategic initiatives to develop technology systems and processes that promote the collective knowledge of the firm, reduce risk, and increase efficiency and collaboration to the continuous benefit of Chapman clients. He works directly with clients, firm management, attorneys, and other departments to develop the firm's innovation and advanced technology strategy.

Outside the office, he has been known to yell into microphones while strumming a guitar. More likely, you might catch him at the record store perusing crates of vinyl records to add to his collection. Most likely, he's out hiking with his wife and kids.
