Bill specializes in empirical analysis of the legal industry and legal education. Bill's industry recognition includes the ABA Journal’s 2009 inaugural class of "Legal Rebels"; the National Law Journal’s 100 most influential lawyers in America; and the National Jurist’s most influential person in legal education.
In 2010, Bill co-founded Lawyer Metrics, an applied research company that helps lawyers use data to make better operational and strategic decisions. In 2015, Lawyer Metrics was acquired by AccessLex Institute. In 2017, Bill founded Legal Evolution, an online publication that chronicles successful innovation within the legal industry.
